Mrs. Conway's Tri-Weekly Trivia Question

The answer to our first question has been revealed!  Click here to find out "Who Said It?" and which class is the smartest!

Here's the second Tri-Weekly Trivia Question of the year - how well do you know your instruments?  To vote, click on the button next to your answer.  Then, click on "Place Your Vote!" and you're done!  A pop-up window will appear with a tally of all our web-based votes.

Instrumental Instruments!
The harpsichord was a very popular instrument during the Baroque Period. Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi (all Baroque composers) wrote many pieces for harpsichord. A harpischord usually has two manuals and sets of strings played by:
strumming with your fingers
plucking with a bird quill
hitting with a felt-covered hammer
none of the above

Another Supply Update

Many thanks to all our families who have contributed items for the Christmas show!  Look for more program info in our next bulletin - it includes arrival times for all our performers as well as times for setup and deadlines for props.  We already have all the yellow posterboard and confetti (not the same thing as glitter!) we need.  We are still in need of items for the backdrop, plastic eggs, posterboard, glue, and glitter.  If you can help, please bring these items to the school as soon as possible.

Costumes are Our Friends, Honest!

You don't have to panic, especially with the costumes.  It was never my intention to raise blood pressures!  I thought for sure every girl would have a skirt she could wear for the program.  You do not need to make or buy a special Mexican skirt!  Just grab whatever you've got in the closet, layer a bunch of them, and the costume is finished.  If you really must buy a skirt, visit St. Vinny's for some great deals!  If you want to fancy up a skirt by adding dangling ribbons, stapled flowers, glitter - go ahead!  I say the flashier, the better!  Your girl can even wear her white school uniform shirt, since she'll have a poncho over it for half the show.  And if you don't have a poncho, it's really easy to make one.  You don't have a sew a single stitch (links to instructions are below in the previous posting).

To clarify: ALL GRADE LEVELS EXCEPT SIXTH will dress in this "ranchero" style.  In addition to this, Pre-K students with "parts" will wear costumes as outlined in the Pre-K Costuming Guide (sent out by Ms. Sather).  SIXTH GRADE: costume requirements can be found here.

Update on Supplies

Thank you to all the parents who have already brought in items for the show!  I truly appreciate your enthusiasm!  At this time, we have enough yellow card stock!  HOWEVER, We still need black (we don't even have one yet!), green, red, and white.  Plus, we really need glitter and the sheets for the backdrop.  We may also need more spray paint.  We also have not seen any forms coming back in mentioning poinsettias!  We can even use real ones, if you remember to pick them back up afterwards to take home.

ADDITION TO THE LIST: 60 plastic Easter eggs or film canisters and about 10 handfuls (20 bags?) of large glitter confetti in a random mix of colors (the shape does not matter; Dollar Tree has some in the party aisle).

Please bring any items you have for the show to the main office AS SOON AS POSSIBLE with a note on it "for Mrs. Conway."  It would also be great if you left your name!  :-)

What Did They Say?!?

It never fails that no matter how often we sing a song in class, the week before the show, it still seems like no one know a word!  To help your child practice at home, lyric sheets are available for download below.  Short sample files of the songs can be found here; they aren't the complete song, but they should refresh your child's memory.

Let's Give a Gift (all grades, 6th contemporary scene)

Silent Night (all grades)

God Listens to the Heart of a Child (1st)

Feliz Navidad (all grades)

All Things Are Possible (2nd and 4th)

Happy Birthday, Jesus (3rd and 5th)

Flower Finale (all grades)

Last Chance: Choir Practice Files

This the last chance for choir members to get a practice CD!  If your child wants to have practice files of their pieces for the program, then please send a blank disc with their name on it to me as soon as possible.  Currently, I cannot upload sound or video files to this page, and my GeoCities account is too small to host all the files.  The files that are available for download on the Geocities account are the "combined" parts and do not best represent how the actual piano accompaniment sounds.  These files are the ones that will probably get the most use anyway.

Your Child CAN Change the World!

Some of you may have already heard about this operation from your child - Operation Dreamseed.  Operation Dreamseed strives to make education a possibility in underdeveloped countries - the main focus is currently on Afghanistan and Iraq, where many children are going to school for the first time.  Dreamseed helps provide these students with the basic supplies they need to attend school.

For this quarter and part of the next, I will be collecting "Music Money" from students toward Operation Dreamseed (the collection bin goes out before every class).  For every Music Money dollar or Band Buck put into the collection jar, I will donate a dollar toward buying the school supplies (and a treat for our soldiers), packing, and sending them over of the contacts on Operation Dreamseed's list.  Many children have already donated towards this operation; some are even putting in REAL money.  Please encourage your child to consider contributing his/her Music Money to Operation Dreamseed.  It's one way they can help change the world.

Christmas Program???  OK...It's Panic Time!

Letters about this year's Christmas program (La Fiesta de la Navidad) are going out today in your Family Packet, so please keep an eye out for them.  As always, we need some help with gathering props, putting props together, and setting up for the program.  Please consider helping out if you can - last year, two people helped me sew elastic bands onto 200+ gift bows last year the weekend before the show.  I know I did about 115 of those on my own - let me tell ya, it was NOT fun.  The props for this year are very easy to make - they would also be a great project to do with your children!  We need many pieces of posterboard cut into "petal" shapes, have glitter added to them, and then attach them to a paint stirrer (by stapling 2 petal shapes, back to back near the handles).  I promise, it's easy.  We have nearly 300 pieces of posterboard to cut (for a total of 150 petals).

Costuming information!  Costuming is very spare and basic this year - students will dress in the "ranchero" style.  This is a romanticized version of old-country Mexico.  Boys will wear black pants with white button down shirts and a red sash (think mariachi).  Girls should wear a pretty white blouse (can have embroidery or light decoration) with very colorful skirts.  The fuller the skirt, the better; you can even layer several skirts to make them poofy.  Girls can also wear their hair in braids or with flowers/ribbons.  ALL the children will need a colorful poncho that they can fold up and "hide."  I used to make these simple, no-sew ponchos when I was a child: take 1 yard of fabric (fleece, cotton or polyester are GREAT) and fold it in half ON THE DIAGONAL so it makes a big triangle.  Fold it in half again so it makes a small triangle.  To make a hole for the head: take a pair of scissors and cut a chunky slit off the inner corner of the triangle (cut AWAY from the side with the single fold, along the side with two folds).  You can fray (rip up) the edges, add fringe, ribbon (whatever!) to personalize it more.  If your child already has a poncho, they can wear it for the program.

Here are some links and photos to help you get a good sense of how your child should dress:

5th Grade Choose Olympic Countries (and Instruments)!

The fifth grade Music Olympic teams have chosen the countries that they will represent for the remainder of the school year!  Try to match the country name to the correct flag.  For the answer, highlight the names of the countries below with your mouse.  For more info on the Music Olympics program, click here!  Mr. Milligan of the Northwest Academy of Music also came into the school to show our students some of the instruments they can play in band.  After his presentation, Mrs. Conway whipped out the school instruments and a half-hour of cacophony followed!  Students will be taking home forms on their instrument preference and rental options Friday (Sept 14).  Please return these forms to the school as soon as possible; definitely by Sept. 20!

WELCOME BACK!!!

We're off to a great start this school year - almost every class has met for their first music class of the year.  We have some new features in the classroom this year.  The Composer and Instrument of the Month bulletin boards have been refined, and the Recorder Karate wall features progress stars instead of colored bars. These changes have been made to make the boards easier to update.  In addition to this, there will be a tri-weekly trivia question posted in the classroom and online.  Parents and guests are invited to participate in this fun activity!  New music-learning programs have been designed for the 5th and 6th grades; they will participate in the Music Olympics and Musical Time Travels, respectively.  Bulletin boards for these programs will be added in the hallway at a later date.

Changes have also been made on the website as well!  New features are being added, and the site will be updated on a regular basis.  I hope that the information you find on these pages is informative, interesting, and entertaining!  If you ever have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (208)765-4327, x201 or at kconway@hfcs.net.

Kudos to the Cavanaugh Family!

The Cavanaugh family has made the donation of a beautiful, gently used clarinet to the music program!  This instrument, along with a flute (loaned to the school by the Lassiter family), a trumpet, trombone, French horn, and snare drum are available for loan through the school.  In addition to these instruments, the following are available for rent or for purchase:

5th Grade: Band Presentation Schedule for Thursday, Sept 13

Mr. Keith Milligan of Northwest Academy of Music will do a short demonstration on traditional band instruments in the Music Room on Thursday, Sept 13 @ 12PM (noon).  He will also talk about the rental program available through Northwest Academy.  Students who choose to participate in band may rent or purchase instruments through Northwest Academy, Taylor Music (a California-based company that Holy Family has used with great success), or through another avenue.  Holy Family also has instruments available for loan (see above Kudos).  To hear and learn more about beginning band instruments, check out the Instruments of Praise website.  Please note that stringed instruments are not band instruments, but orchestral instruments.

The Music Money / Band Bucks Reward Program

This very popular rewards program is back again this year!  Students earn these colored dollar bills through a variety of ways, a few of which include: demonstrating charity and good behavior in class, being a leader, being extra helpful, and practicing their music.  Students in general music earn "Music Money," while band students earn "Band Bucks."  Although both are essentially the same, they are not interchangeable.  Students are responsible for keeping these bills safe until the end of the quarter, when they can redeem them for treats and prizes in the Music Store or deposit them in the "bank."  I do not replace missing, lost, or stolen money.  If YOU (the parent) are the one responsible for the loss of your child's money (it went through the wash, in the trash, etc.), then you can write me a note and I will "refund" your child the average amount collected in class.

Please note: if there is anything that you do not want your child purchasing from the store (e.g. more than one candy bar per quarter, peanut M&Ms, temporary tattoos),  please let me know via e-mail.  Otherwise, I cannot be blamed if your child comes home with a gallon bag of Hot Tamales against your wishes!  :-)  Pictures of Music Store are posted below so you can see why the children love this program.  Many children buy presents for family members from the store!

For your reference, Music Money bills are orange ($1), yellow ($5), and pink ($10), while Band Bucks are green ($1), blue ($5), and pink ($10).

Coeur d'Alene Junior and Youth Orchestra Auditions

Our local youth orchestra will be holding audition on Monday, Sept 17 @ 6:30PM at Lake City High School.  More information can be found at the CDAYO webpage: click here.

Opera Plus! Presents Madama Butterfly

Directed by Todd Robinson, who sang the role of Figaro in last year's production of Le Nozze di Figaro.  This is the first tragic opera produced by Opera Plus!.  Mrs. Conway has a small role as Cio-Cio San's mother.  Unfortunately, Mrs. Conway rates this opera as an R.  Maybe a PG-13.  Parents, please read the synopsis of this piece before deciding to bring your child to the performance.  The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has rated an excellent film version of Madama Butterfly as well.  Performances are on Saturday, Sept 29 @ 7PM and Sunday, Sept 30 @ 2PM.
